Preparing for Your Water Heater Installation Appointment
Installing a water heater is not an easy task for the average homeowner. Whether you have an electric or gas water heater, you really are best off leaving this work to a professional. While this means you won't have to worry about things like running wires or connecting valves, there are still a few preparatory steps you will want to take before your installation appointment.
1. Clear the path to your water heater.
Your installation technician will need to carry the old hot water heater out of your home and the new one into your home. They'll need a clear pathway to do this safely. So, it's a good idea for you to move all area rugs, furniture, and other items that may be sitting in the path from your door to your water heater. If there are any really narrow doors in this path, take a look at how they are attached to the frame and have the proper screwdrivers on-hand just in case your technician needs to take them off to get the hot water heater through.
2. Take photos of the main connections.
Take a couple of pictures of your existing water heater, focusing on where it connects to the water pipes and the electrical or gas supply. Send these photos to your water heater installation company. They'll be able to tell from the photos what types of connections they need to bring with then, which can save them time and energy.
3. Consider whether you want the hot water heater moved.
By default, most installers will take the old water heater out and put a new one in the same place. But it does not have to be this way. Think about any problems you currently have with your hot water heater's location. Do you have trouble using the room for storage because the water heater is right in the middle of it? Does the water cool off because it has to travel through a long pipe between the heater and your tap? Then you may want to have the installer put your new water heater in a different spot. Call to let them know this is your preference before your appointment.
If you take the time to follow these three steps before your water heater installation appointment, you'll be set. Your installer will appreciate the extra effort you've put in as it will allow them to work more efficiently.
